A second caller then poses as a lawyer or bail bondsman to add credibility. Victims are told to keep everything secret from other family members. 2,915 grandparent scam phone numbers reports have been filed by Chicago residents. In Illinois, residents filed 186,426 fraud reports last year totalling $318 million in losses (FTC Consumer Sentinel).
